voici la réponse - the answer to 'negerzoenen' - the biscuits with a peculiar name.

Dear Mr/Mrs,

We hereby refer to your email of 23 October and hereby inform you the coming into being of the name Negerzoenen.

In 1920 in the Oudenbosche Bakery in Holland the birth of the first Negerzoen was made anounced: a wafer topped with eggwhite cream and covered with a coco fantasy layer. By consuming fresh Negerzoenen a brown impression was left on the lips. So Negerzoenenem became the brown lips to kiss. This is how the productname Negerzoen came into being.

Over the many years to follow Negerzoenen have become the household name for this productcategory e.g. as Jodenkoeken (Jew Biscuits) have become the standard for a certain type of biscuits (and Kleenex for all tissues) in Holland.

It is our opinion that the word Negerzoenen (only used in Holland) can only be explained in a positive manner. It still remains today a delicious product for all ages and has become a product appreciated by a steady consumer base in marketplace.

We hope we have informed you to your satisfaction.

Best Regards,
Van der Breggen
